Who is Norman Walker?

Norman Walker is a British businessman who was a pioneer in the field of juicing. While he may not have created juicing himself (which has roots as far back as 150 BC), he did take a look at the juicers of the time and realized that they weren’t quite right.

Norman Walker, d.SC, Ph.D, was born in Genoa, Liguria, Italy in January 1886. After having a breakdown as a young man, he observed the women in the kitchen of a peasant house peeling carrots, taking notice of the moisture on the underside of the peel. He decided to try grinding them and thus his first cup of carrot juice was born.
When he became ill as a young man, he decided to begin drinking fresh fruit and vegetable juices in order to cure himself, which proved to be successful and thus his fascination was born. Later on in his life, he moved to Long Beach, California where he teamed up with a doctor and opened a juice bar, offering home delivery.
By 1930, the two created dozens of fresh juice recipes for specific conditions, such as colon cleansing. With this success, he created his own juicer, the Norwalk. It had two parts, the first being a grinder to slowly grind the vegetables and the second being a press to extract the juice. One problem though: the San Francisco health department banned unpasteurized vegetable juices. That didn’t stop Norman. Instead, he moved to Anaheim where he kept his plant open despite the steel shortage during World War I.
Eventually, he sold his share of his factory and began his own health publication. When he moved to Arizona, where he passed away, he devoted himself to writing. Thanks to his diet of fruits and vegetables, rumors swirled that he was as old as 119 when he died. His real age upon death was 99 (according to his grave marker and the US Social Security Death Index).

Raw Foods

Norman Walker believed that all cooked or baked goods were “dead” and therefore unhealthy. He also was a strict vegan who was against the idea of eating meat, dairy, or dairy products. The raw foods diet also meant no bread, pasta, rice, or refined sugar.

Walker believed that juicing was the way to get maximum benefits from raw fruits and vegetables. Solid foods require hours of digestion, whereas pulp-free juices go directly into your bloodstream, the nutrients soaking in within 15-minutes of consumption.

Walker found that your colon was an indicator of your health. He felt that raw vegetable salads, fresh fruits, legumes, and unprocessed grains, along with plenty of distilled water, would keep your colon nice and healthy.

Your spiritual and emotional health are also incredibly important. Stress, anger, and other negative emotions can affect your physical health. Walker believed in happiness, optimism, and laughter as some of the best ways to prevent serious health issues.
